61st Annual Tri-State Antique Engine & Threshers Show 2014

Summertime is always busy on the farm and normally there is no time for vacation. However, last week we had what could be called a "Hurricane" here in Northern Colorado and that gave us the chance we needed to get away! Where did we go? Bird City, Kansas for the 61st Annual Tri-State Antique Engine & Threshers Show! http://www.threshershow.org

The main goal of this wonderful event is to preserve "The Rural Heritage". It is the great effort of just a small few. The weekend was packed with demonstrations and buildings full of history. You know the phrase " We have come a long way"? Well, it rang true this weekend.

Standing by a wheat field watching a threshing demonstration operated by a steam powered tractor, a thresher, and large belt connecting the flywheels I was amazed by agricultural production of the past.

That first day the belt came off of the flywheel at least 6 or 7 times! How frustrating when you have a crop that needs to be harvested and the entire process comes to a halt.

I think my point is becoming clearer. Antique equipment is an important part of farming and rural history. This industry has roots that deserve respect.

Even though I wasn't raised on a farm my fiancé was. Antique tractors have a special place in his heart...and a few outbuildings.

There needs to be more people like him who want to contribute to preserving the past. This experience not only educated me but got me thinking...

If you are ever driving through Kansas on Highway 36 around the last Thursday of July, do yourself a favor and stop at the show in Bird City, Kansas. You might learn something new about one of the industries that helps to put food on the table and clothes on your back.
